Democrats in Congress consider legal action against Trump

Democratic lawmakers are exploring the possibility of taking President Donald Trump to court should U.S. military operations against Iran continue beyond May 1st without formal authorization from Congress. This was revealed by Time magazine.

At the center of the dispute is the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the law that limits the president’s war powers by requiring them to obtain legislative approval within 60 days of the start of any military action. The clock began ticking on March 2, when the White House officially notified Congress of the start of operations; the temporary window granted to the Commander-in-Chief therefore expires tomorrow, May 1st.

For the Democrats, that date represents the best concrete opportunity to legally challenge what they consider a war initiated in violation of the Constitution. Internal talks are reportedly still in a preliminary stage, but they could accelerate rapidly if operations do not cease at the expiration of the deadline.
