Xi Jinping calls on Moscow for closer strategic cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “closer” and “more solid” strategic coordination with Russia, with a view to defending the common interests of the two countries and strengthening unity among the countries of the Global South. This was reported by the official news agency Xinhua.

The statements were released during a meeting in Beijing with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who is on an official visit to the Chinese capital.

Xi urged the two countries to fulfill their responsibilities as major powers and permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the role that Beijing and Moscow are called upon to play on the international stage.

The Chinese president also remarked on how the stability and predictability of Sino-Russian relations take on a particular value in an international context marked by profound changes and growing instability. This message sounds like an implicit response to global geopolitical tensions and the Western attempt to isolate Russia.
