US shaken by BRICS rise: Trump announces 50% tariffs on Brazil.

In an increasingly clear sign of growing American concern over the economic and political expansion of the BRICS nations, President Donald Trump announced a 50% customs tariff on all imports from Brazil, effective August 1st. The decision was made public via a post on Truth Social, where Trump shared the text of a message addressed to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The move sends a message of both challenge and apprehension, set against a geopolitical backdrop where the BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—is steadily gaining ground as an alternative power center to the West. Trump’s message leaves no room for compromise: should Brasília respond with reciprocal measures, Washington will raise tariffs further by the same amount.

But that is not all. The US administration also announced the immediate launch of a trade investigation, led by negotiator Jamieson Greer, into Brazilian trade practices. This could lead to additional tariff increases and heightened diplomatic tensions.

Beneath the rhetoric of protectionism lies America’s unease about a new global order challenging Washington’s century-old supremacy. Brazil, with its growing economic weight within the BRICS, is increasingly seen as a less controllable actor on the world stage.
