US sanctions against Francesca Albanese: Washington punishes those who expose crimes but ignores UN Resolutions on Israel.
While continuing to ignore international resolutions calling for an end to Israeli military operations in Gaza and the protection of Palestinian civilians, Washington chooses to target those who dare to expose these violations: the United States has imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian Territories.
The measure, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, fits into an increasingly aggressive stance against critics of Israel’s actions. According to Rubio, Albanese has conducted a “shameful political and economic warfare campaign against the United States and Israel,” pressuring the International Criminal Court to act against senior officials of both countries—a move Washington considers extremely serious.
Yet it is precisely the ICC that in recent months has received detailed documentation from Albanese and other UN experts concerning alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. In particular, the rapporteur openly spoke of an ongoing “genocide” and called for the immediate suspension of arms supplies to Israel, accusing it of practicing an “apartheid” regime—a country so democratic and respectful of human life that it does not even allow humanitarian convoys to enter.
Therefore, Albanese must be punished, and the Americans can continuously try to silence Israel’s systematic violations of UN resolutions. While the United Nations calls for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and respect for international law, the United States looks the other way, providing questionable diplomatic and military cover to Tel Aviv, blocking binding initiatives at the Security Council, and rejecting any sanctions against the Jewish state.
The accusations against Albanese—including allegations of undisclosed funding from organizations linked to Hamas—remain to be verified within the UN framework. However, for many observers, the US action appears as an intimidation tactic aimed at anyone questioning the strategic alliance between Washington and Israel, even at the cost of silencing independent voices within the United Nations.
As the conflict in Gaza continues to claim lives and the international community remains divided, the question becomes increasingly urgent: why are those who document crimes punished, while those who commit them go unpunished?
