Trump wants naval blockade of Iran: “No ship will pass”

Donald Trump is raising the stakes even further with Iran. In an interview with Fox News, the President of the United States announced his intention to impose a total naval blockade against Tehran, modeled after the one already applied to Venezuela: no tankers entering or leaving, no waivers, no exceptions.

“We are imposing a complete blockade,” Trump declared bluntly. “We will not allow Iran to make money by selling oil to whomever they like and not to whomever they don’t like. It’s all or nothing, and that’s how it’s going to be.”

An international coalition behind Washington?

The American president suggested that the initiative will not be a solo action. “Numerous countries will help us in this plan,” Trump stated, without providing names or details regarding agreements already reached with potential allies.

The previous blockade in Venezuela

The reference to the naval blockade of Venezuela is not accidental: that measure severely hit Caracas’s crude oil exports, depriving the Maduro government of one of its main sources of funding. Applying the same scheme to Iran, the second-largest OPEC producer and a key player in the global energy market, would have much broader repercussions, with potential shockwaves for international oil prices and geopolitical balances in the Middle East.
