Trump on Iran: “They desperately want to negotiate, but they are afraid to say it”

Iran wants to negotiate “at all costs,” but does not dare to admit it publicly for fear of internal consequences. This was stated by U.S. President Donald Trump during the annual fundraising dinner for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

“They are negotiating, and they want to make a deal so desperately, but they are afraid to say it because they think they will be killed by their own people. They are also afraid of being killed by us,” Trump said.

The American president also joked about the possibility of personally taking over the leadership of Iran. “There has never been a head of state who wanted that job less than the person leading Iran today. I hear things like: ‘We would like to make you the next Supreme Leader.’ No, thank you. I don’t want it,” he said to laughter from the audience.

The “military decimation” of Iran

Trump described the ongoing operation against Iran as a “military decimation,” carefully choosing his words to avoid the institutional implications associated with a formal declaration of war.

The president also spoke of an “excursion to hell” and justified the intervention by citing the need to eliminate the Iranian nuclear threat. “We had to get rid of the cancer. We had to root it out. The cancer was Iran with a nuclear weapon. We rooted it out. Now we are going to finish the job,” he declared.

Regarding the spikes in oil and energy prices triggered by the conflict, Trump downplayed the issue, stating they are “short-term” effects that will subside once the operation is concluded.

Trump then praised the capabilities of the American armed forces, claiming the interception of a massive Iranian missile attack. “One hundred missiles were launched by Iran and all one hundred were shot down immediately. We have the most extraordinary military in the world,” he concluded.
