Tehran to the UN: “Condemn the aggressors or the United Nations will lose all credibility”
Iran is taking its battle to the international diplomatic stage and directly challenging the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi contacted António Guterres by telephone to firmly reiterate that the UN has an institutional obligation to act and that silence is equivalent to complicity.
“The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized that the UN and its Secretary-General have a statutory obligation to condemn the aggression categorically and unequivocally, and to hold the aggressors accountable for their actions in accordance with Chapter 7 of the UN Charter,” reads the statement released by the Foreign Ministry in Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz: the crossroads of the crisis
At the center of the discussion, beyond the demand for international justice, was the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. Araghchi urged the international community to look at the root causes of instability in the region, identifying them as the joint military aggression of the United States and Israel.
Tehran also reaffirmed its position regarding the ongoing naval blockade as a legitimate stance: “As a coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz, the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with established principles and norms of international law, has prevented the transit of vessels belonging to or associated with the aggressing parties,” the ministry specified.
