Putin’s envoy: “The Hungarian vote will accelerate the collapse of the EU”

The Hungarian elections are not just an internal matter for Budapest. At least not according to the Kremlin. Kirill Dmitriev, Vladimir Putin’s special envoy for international economic cooperation and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), commented in sharp tones on the outcome of the April 12 vote: in his view, the result will do nothing but accelerate the collapse of the European Union.

“It will only accelerate the collapse of the EU. Check in four months if I am right,” Dmitriev wrote on the X platform, responding to statements by British far-right activist Tommy Robinson, according to whom Hungary has now “fallen” in light of the electoral outcome.

The vote that will change the face of Hungary

Triggering the reactions was the verdict of the polls: the opposition party Tisza won 138 of the 199 seats in the Hungarian National Assembly, the country’s unicameral parliament. This result radically redraws the Hungarian political landscape and is seen by many observers as a sign of a turning point compared to the years of government under Viktor Orbán, historically the European leader closest to Moscow.
