Mark Rutte: “Trump’s disappointment toward some NATO allies is understandable”

No NATO country has been attacked by Iran, but for Secretary General Mark Rutte, “President Donald Trump’s disappointment toward some allies of the Alliance regarding the management of the conflict with Iran is more than understandable.”

A statement, released to CNN microphones, that highlights, as is well known, the Atlantic Alliance’s subservience to the USA and, simultaneously, the disregard for the sovereignty of its member countries. “I understand his point of view,” Rutte stated, emphasizing however how most European nations have provided a significant contribution in terms of military bases, logistical support, and overflight authorizations, respecting the commitments made.

After the meeting, Trump returned to highlighting the internal divisions within the Alliance, specifically recalling the case of Greenland. In a message published on Truth Social, despite “Rutte’s defense,” the president in fact harshly criticized NATO, stating that “it wasn’t there when we needed it and it won’t be there if we need it again,” further defining the Danish island as a “badly managed great mass of ice.”

The theme of Greenland remains one of the main points of friction between Washington and European allies. On January 31, the US administration announced the start of negotiations on the future status of the island, expressing confidence in the possibility of an agreement beneficial to both sides of the Atlantic. Trump has repeatedly reiterated the United States’ interest in Greenland, having already proposed its purchase during his first term and, more recently, suggesting its annexation.
